I Corinthians 10

You see how My servant describes that all of Israel that came out of Egypt had an outward identification with Moses in the act of deliverance and the participation in My provision for My people.  But it declares that I was not well pleased with all of them.  In spite of their identification with My deliverer, in spite of their participation in My provision, many of them gave themselves over to idolatry and the evil practices connected with it.  My servant goes on to declare that this record is not just a historical account of what happened, but it is intended to instruct those who live at the end of the ages how to live so as to be well pleasing to Me, and how to avoid falling into the same pattern of sin as did your fathers.  For the consequences of such are just as sure judgment as the consequences that befell your fathers that embraced those evil ways even though the outward form of those consequences may differ.  You may ask, “Father are we in danger of going the evil way of our fathers who were judged in the wilderness?”  My reply to you is “Yes indeed you need to beware.”  Though you too have identified with My deliverer and you too have participated in My gracious provision, the enticements of the flesh, the seductions of the evil one, and the trials of faith are as present and as strong as they were in those days.  While you have much more light, much more revelation, it was not outward identification that made the difference for those who did not yield to evil.  It was rather an obedient heart that never took for granted the blessings and the wonders.  And that revelation of My Spirit given to you is that which will make the difference between compromise with what is evil and faithfulness in all your ways.  Do you not observe today that many who identify outwardly either fall away in the face of trials, or else compromise in following evil ways?  Thus these words are as important for you today as they were for those to whom they were originally addressed.  Never ever be satisfied with mere outward conformity.  Always, as My servant admonishes, seek in everything to do it to My glory.  In this way you shall surely avoid the evil ways of your fathers and the severe consequences that followed.

I Corinthians 7

I have spoken to you many things about this portion.  Today I want to draw your attention to My servant who was used to bring the wisdom that is given here to the believers in Corinth, wisdom to respond to the specific questions and problems that were addressed to him by My people.  You see that he is called upon to give very practical counsel about specific situations and problems that existed in the church at Corinth.  These are not theoretical matters or matters of general doctrine, but concern and affect the every day life of the believers.  And you see, as you observe these matters, he is required to consider that they have a wide range of concerns, such as marriage and divorce, the status and identity of believers, and the responsibility of fathers towards virgin daughters.  You will see that My servant draws upon the source of revelation and upon his own judgment and experience as it is guided by My Spirit.  It is important for you to understand that this is a very critical and valuable aspect of My servant Paul’s ministry.  And it is not just something that is an occasional and rare demand upon My servant, nor is it something that is confined only to My servant Paul because he was an apostle and a receiver and proclaimer of revelation.  No, as I have told you before, this was the exercise of pastoral ministry and counsel and is the requirement of every true servant who is called to help, establish and nurture My people in the way that I would have them to walk.  This means that you as a true servant are required to know My Word in a very deep and constantly growing way.  It also means that you are required to be utterly dependent upon My Spirit, not only for the proper interpretation and application of My Word, but also for that wisdom to counsel in matters that pertain to the life of My people which are not specifically spoken of in My Word.  It also means that you are to be sufficiently in touch with the problems and issues of their lives so that you will know not only about teaching sound doctrine, but about how My truth applies to their lives.  You will notice in a number of portions that speak of the ministry of My servant Paul to the churches  that he is ever concerned to enquire about what is happening to them and about their spiritual health and well being.  So My servant must always be in touch with the living situation that exists in the lives of My people.  He must never allow himself to be unattached and unconcerned about those living situations.  And you see in this case that the initiative to enquire of My servant and to pose the problems and questions that were being faced came from the believers themselves.  They were not hypothetical, but actual living situations.  And you see how My servant was concerned to teach them seriously and very carefully as a stewardship unto Me.  It may be that at times problems and questions will be presented to to give counsel and godly you for which you do not have the answers, but you can be assured that if your heart and mind are open to receive My wisdom and My counsel, that a response which will be truly helpful will be granted unto you.  You will also take care, as did My servant Paul, to make a clear distinction between what has been granted by revelation and what is merely your own sanctified judgment.  But in both you must depend upon My Spirit to convince My children what is the truth that is from Me in which they are to give heed and to obey.  And finally, even as My servant Paul drew attention to the fact that his own life and the way he conducted himself in ministry is what commended him to the believers as a channel of My counsel and My wisdom, so also should your life and conduct commend you.  Consider these things and take them to heart, for if you are to serve Me truly among My people, you must be ready to deal with such practical issues and wisdom as did My servant Paul.

Bible Devotions From I Corinthians 10

My servant Paul warns the believers that when they think they are standing firm they need to be careful, especially careful, for he knew that as he gave the examples of My people who sinned and fell in the wilderness that the believers might easily think that they would not do as those Israelites did. And is it not easy for you to think the same? For consider that all of those who came out of Egypt experienced the greatness of My wonders, of the powerful judgments and awesome things by which I delivered them from the Egyptians and of the marvels of My provision for them. But as My servant Paul notes, all of these did not eradicate the evil that was in their hearts. For though they were awed by My mighty deeds, they were not thereby caused to submit in their hearts and to trust Me to such an extent that when they were tested they remained faithful, but instead they turned away from Me to worship and to sacrifice to an idol and to do all those abominable things that were true of the ways of the Egyptians and all those who were idolaters. And though the consequences of these things brought severe judgments, even these judgments did not change their evil hearts.

Is it not so that when you have often experienced the manifestation of My power and My grace in your behalf that you have found that great temptation followed such experiences? Were not those times the very times in which you yielded to temptation rather than turning to Me, failing to receive My grace to resist? You see that these examples are not merely limited to those believers to whom My servant Paul wrote, for are you not also among those upon whom the ends of the ages have come? And have you not found the same tendencies to yield to the flesh and to follow attitudes and patterns of conduct that were like those of your fathers in the wilderness? And are you not surrounded with circumstances that involve the same kind of challenges that faced your fathers in the wilderness, temptations to turn from Me to other sources when you are tested, temptations to give yourselves over to fleshly desires that can produce the same kinds of conduct that they manifested; sexual immorality, provocation by pitting your will against Mine, and grumbling and complaining about your circumstances, which in essence is really bringing Me under the criticism of your own judgment? Do you not see that all those things which they fell into and those temptations which they faced are essentially the same as you face in this day? That is true because the flesh is still the same and it is still susceptible to the work of the enemy and to the enticements of the natural world. What then is your recourse in going a different way than the way of your fathers? First of all, it is to remember that you are never beyond the possibility of falling to temptation. And that is why My servant warns that you must take special care never to think when you are standing that falling is impossible. Secondly, you must recognize that there is no temptation that is unique. All that you face in the way of temptation has been faced before by all whom I have called to be Mine. And thirdly, even in the midst of any and every temptation I am faithful to provide a way of escape so that you may bear up under it, so that you may stand and not fall. But this requires in addition to exercising that care that Paul admonishes, that you always look to Me, turn to Me, depend upon Me rather than upon yourselves, for I am the only one who will enable you to stand through any and every temptation that may come to you. In this way it will not be said of you that I am not pleased. For in turning to Me you will turn away from the evil heart which caused your fathers to sin and to fall in the wilderness. And in turning away your heart you will instead desire to please Me, and you shall be among those who will stand and who will glorify Me.
