Romans 8:1-18

Posted by: admin    in Romans

I want you to notice that My servant Paul declares in this portion that there is no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus.  Everything that flows in blessing, in freedom, in the victorious life flows to you because you are in My Son.  It is your living connection with Him that provides the blessings, the freedom that My servant writes about here.  But I want you to notice that it is not an automatic flow of blessing that results from just believing.  And I want you also to notice that life in My Son does not take place without the necessity of your choice.  So My servant declares that those who set their minds on the things of the flesh experience death, while those who set their mind on the Spirit experience life and peace.  Therefore your choice of what you will set your mind upon is absolutely vital and necessary if you are truly to experience all that is yours in My Son.  The flesh, though it declares here that you are to put it to death, will not by virtue of that disappear and cease to be a problem and a challenge to your life in My Son.  But then by death My servant means that you are to separate yourself from what appeals to the flesh and what satisfies the flesh.  You will find that you must do this not just once, but over and over.  My servant declares that because you have been given the Spirit of My Son you have within you both the prompting and the power of the Spirit to turn away from the mind that focuses on the flesh and from the deeds that will result from such a focus.  But once you have made the choice to do what the Spirit prompts you to do, you will experience the enabling power of My Spirit.  And, as it declares here,  I who raised My Son from the dead will give life to your mortal bodies through My Son.  This means that you will as a result not experience separation from My fellowship, which is what is involved in the death that comes from the mind and the deeds of the flesh, but instead you will experience what My servant declares to be life and peace.  And you will recognize how great a difference there is between what the flesh produces and what the Spirit produces.  It is only as you walk in this way of dependence upon the Spirit that you will really know what it is to be a true son to Me.  The Spirit will bear witness to your spirit that this is who you really are.  And you see that My servant recognizes that this choice to walk in the Spirit, to depend upon Him and His enabling power and to receive true life as a result does not mean that you will escape sufferings in this time.  This life is not a fantasy or an ideal that allows your escape from  the reality of what it means to live in a world that is hostile to Me and deeply affected by sin.  But though there is suffering involved, it is not the same quality of suffering experienced by those who choose the mind and the deeds of the flesh and the ways of the world.  For having been joined to My Son whose life is within you, you are joined to Him who suffered in order to carry out My will in a world that is contrary to it.  And so shall it be for you as a true son.  But your suffering accomplishes something truly wonderful.  My servant declared that the mind set on the Spirit is life and peace, and that life and peace is sustained even in the midst of suffering.  This is because He dwells within you and you have chosen to embrace His suffering.  You have a joy in knowing that the suffering that you experience in the present time is very small compared with the glory that is going to be yours, and all who trust in My Son, when He appears.  And the more you set your heart upon this hope, the more you will be prompted to choose the mind of the Spirit and to turn away from the mind of the flesh.  And you will find that even in the midst of suffering there is that wonderful sense of peace and that assurance that the life within you is truly enduring, eternal, and glorifying to Me.

Bible Devotions From I Peter 4

Posted by: admin    in I Peter

There are not many even among those who name the name of My Son who when they think about suffering think about it as something positive, as something beneficial. However, when you who are called to life in My Son are able to embrace the truth about suffering that is revealed in this portion, you will be able to recognize from the heart how precious, how valuable, how productive of good suffering in the name of and for the sake of My Son can be. But you see here My servant Peter is not only teaching and revealing here the true purposes and blessings of suffering in the name of My Son, but he is exhorting and encouraging the believers who are suffering in that way to commit their souls, that is their very lives to Me, and to keep on doing good even in the midst of that suffering. For he shows here that when one so embraces that purpose, he has embraced the same purpose, the same attitude as My Son. And he declares that you should arm yourselves with such a purpose. In so doing you will turn from sinful ways that arise out of selfish and rebellious attitudes, and instead be committed to and pre-occupied with doing My will. And out of this will flow a life which is not lived for what is soon passing away, but one which is lived to glorify Me. The practical results will be a serious and watchful prayer life, fervent love for your fellow believers, generous hospitality and the exercise of the gifts that I have given you for the blessing of others. These are the manifestations of doing good about which My servant Peter exhorts the believers to continue in even when they suffer. And consider that you are not only to regard suffering in the name of My Son as something to be valued, but as he declares here, you are actually to rejoice in that suffering because you are able to recognize that by it you are actually participating in the sufferings of My Son. You will recall that My servant Paul when he suffered actually declared that he was filling up what had been lacking in the sufferings of My Son. By this he did not mean that the sufferings which My Son experienced in His time on earth were in-sufficient or deficient, but that His pattern of suffering did not end with His earthly life, but was to continue through the sufferings of His servants in His name. And since His suffering was totally for the sake of fulfilling My will, and thus as He said glorifying Me, so will the sufferings that you experience in Him also be for My glory. As you identify in this way with His sufferings, in a real sense your sufferings become a continuance of His suffering. And in as much as He suffered doing My will, He glorified Me. In such a manner as your suffering is an extension of His, you also glorify Me. So then, if you really see and embrace suffering in this way, does it not truly become a mighty weapon to overcome sin, to effect the doing of good in very practical and fruitful ways, and to manifest My glory in the earth? Let this perspective of suffering enter into your hearts and it will not longer seem that suffering is a bad thing, something to loath and to be avoided.

Bible Devotions From I Peter 4

Posted by: admin    in I Peter

Though I have emphasized suffering from this portion and spoken in great detail of its purpose, as well as its certainty, I want to declare to you that by embracing the inevitability and the purpose that I have for you in suffering, this matter is very closely connected with something else that I have also been emphasizing and to which I have called you. For have I not said that I want you to draw closer and closer to Me that you may know Me intimately. For you see that when you really do know Me intimately and you find the satisfaction and the joy of so knowing Me, you actually enter into that same joy that motivated and sustained My son through all of His sufferings. And surely when you know Me in this way you will truly experience what He declared when He said that He gives to you the fullness of joy, the joy that He said would be His joy within you that would cause your joy to be full. I want you to know Me even as He did, and to share in that same joy that was His. For when you do, you will find that you no longer have to struggle greatly about the inevitability of suffering as you live for Me. However intense your experience of suffering may be, even as you go through it, because your heart is fixed and fully satisfied in Me as the heart of My Son was fixed and satisfied, then you will also within the suffering experience the joy. And that joy will assure you that My Spirit of grace and of glory rests upon you. This is the true foundation of your life in My Son that can never be taken away, even though through suffering you may be greatly shaken upon that foundation. But you see from these words that My servant Peter wrote, that as you go through suffering, you are neither absorbed nor consumed by it. For you are so sustained by knowing Me in the way that I want you to know Me, that you will be moved to commit yourselves completely to Me and to be actively committed to doing good, in order to glorify My name and to bless others. So then I want you to recognize and to find peace and satisfaction in knowing Me more intimately. For it will be that by which you are sustained through suffering and you will be enabled to do good continually.
